Likely never: This type of tooth damage can only be solved by a dentist. Do not even try to do it yourself. Also, it will not smooth out on its own - however it will tend to get worse on its own.

Many years...: Through wear and tear the teeth smooth out perhaps very slowly, over years of time. However, during that same time the teeth can also get more chipped or broken. I would highly recommend seeing a dentist to address the cause of the problem and to prevent further damage. We cannot predict smoothing out as more damage most likely will occur....
