Risk vrs Benefit: Very safe! dosage extremely low, and dentist uses shielding. What is unsafe is missing cavity between teeth that can't be seen without x-ray, and tooth becomes abscessed w infection spreading to blood stream. X-rays also needed to evaluate development of underlying permanent teeth. Your dentist will take only those x-rays needed for complete evaluation.

Very safe: When all standard safety precautions are taken, dental X-rays are very safe with minimal radiation and maximum resolution. Today's X-ray equipment is able to eliminate unnecessary radiation. The test is necessary for a proper diagnosis.
