What causes "water on the knee"? how long can it take to go away? why do doctors not want to drain the knee?

Inflammation: This is called a knee effusion and is the result of joint inflammation or damage. As a rheumatologist i strongly favor joint aspiration as it is often very valuable in establishing the cause. Also, a cortisone injection done at the same time can help quite a bit with improvement of the swelling and pain.
