Possible root canal : Hard to "numb" and a tooth that was filled being painful, may mean you will need a root canal treatment (rct), but possibly not. Early need for rct may not show on x-ray, but symptoms may define the need. Call & see your dentist, sometimes deep decay, when removed &filled will be sensitive for several days.

Inflamed nerve: The nerve becomes inflamed and the ? Is whether or not it is reversible or irreversible. It may be due to any number of problems with the placement of the filling, requiring sedation of the nerve or refilling the tooth. It might be irreversible and require rct. You should be able to get an answer from your dentist as far as how long to wait, what to do from here. If unsatisfied get 2nd opinion.

Yes: If the filling was deep, and it is a white filling, then yes. A root canal is needed if the cavity you had previously went deep, you are not sleeping well at night, and you have been taking Ibuprofen without relief. It takes a while for any signs to show up on x-rays, so i wouldn't wait more than a month.

Filling may be microscopically high? See Dentist for quick fix. Damage to tooth may have necessitated deep filling, a surgical procedure. If it does not start improving, a little each day after the 3rd day, root canal Rx may be advisable. X-ray may not show damage. See an Endodontist.
