Very likely: Herpes acts up when you are physically or emotionally stressed. It starts as red spots which become fluid-filled vessicles. These rupture and ulcerate (the open skin is painful), and then scab/heal. Any recurrent infection in the boxer's shorts area if herpes first and everything else second. You can take Valtrex (valacyclovir) from your fp for episodic treatment of outbreaks.
