Pulled rib muscle: Excessive coughing could be a sign of bronchitis or lung infection but frequently it is simply a pulled muscle that holds your ribs together. These are very small muscles that when pulled can produce very strong pain, especially when coughing, sneezing or even breathing. Try taking over the counter pain meds such as advil or aleve (naproxen) to see if you get some relief. If not see you primary care doctor.

Rib fracture?: Sometimes with strenuous coughing, one can crack a rib. This may not be a through-and-through fracture, but enough to cause pain -- especially with movement. Or there can be a dislocation of a rib causing similar discomfort. Please see your primary care physician for suggestions in your personal case.
