Eval 1st; Treat 2nd: First you need to evaluate and then, based upon the evaluation, certain specific treatment modalities can be employed. Go to my chronic pain board at Quora.com; where I discuss evaluations and treatments.

Rest: Treat TMJ pain just like you would a sore or sprained ankle or knee. Try to rest the joint by eating only soft foods. Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen. Finally, apply ice to the area of pain after each meal.

OTHER OPTIONS: Oral surgeons are usually not the main practitioner to treat TMJ/TMd unless there is severe trauma involved. There are many dentists whom have become TMJ/TMD specialists and often provide conservative therapy. TMJ is never cured, just maintained. Surgery should be the last option.

A few things: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
