TMJ: Fabricate a occlusal splint/night guard (plastic appliance that snaps onto you teeth) or do a occlusal equilibration (bite adjustment reshaping teeth) both serve to balance the bite so the teeth/muscles/tmj are all in harmony together.

Find cause first: Before you have treatment a diagnosis is needed. Tmd's can have a variety of causes from a poor bite to arthritis. A dentist who specializes in this can help. Once a diagnosis is made then the treating doctor can give you your options. In the vast majority of cases a simple appliance that you wear over your teeth is all that is needed. Treatment can even be as simple as a bite adjustment.

TMD treatment: Most instances oof pain in the tm joints and associated muscles are self limiting and will go away on there own. Treatmments such as bite adjustments, orthodontics and surgery are very seldom necessary. Studies have shown that the bite relationship has very little if any relationship to tmds. Treatment should alsways be a conservative as possible; physical therapy, rest, medications if needed.

See a specialist: Tmj problems don't usually subside on their own. The cause and source of the tmj/tmd pain must be evaluated, along with a super thorough history. A TMJ specialist should be consulted to get the answers that you desire.

A few things.: Common TMJ symptoms: pain/tenderness of face, jaw joint area, ear, neck and shoulders, limited mouth opening, jaws that get "stuck" or "lock" in the open- or closed-mouth position, jaw joint clicking, popping, or grating sounds, , painful chewing, ear symptoms (hearing loss, imbalance, ear ringing, stuffiness). Complicated problem to sort out. See a board certified oral & maxillofacial surgeon.
