A member asked:

Can a mild tortuous descending thoracic aorta be caused by a 5cm hiatal hernia? should this be a concern when having surgery for the hernia?

NO: Hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the aorta.

No, and no: The two issues are completely separate. I have seen dozens of occasions where the aorta is tortuous or not in the usual position in relation to the diaphragm during these types of hernia repairs. Make sure to see a general or thoracic surgeon with substantial experience in laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair for a consultation. Best of luck.
