A member asked:

Can a hiatal hernia get worse overtime? will i need to have surgery to fix? chest pressure /shortness of breath.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Waxes and wanes: It can get worse but it can also get better. There are periods of remission and relapse. Most people don't need surgery. Intense medical management and dietary practices usually suffice. Put the head of your bed on a block. Don't eat or drink for 2 hrs before bed. Take an acid blocking medicine twice a day for several weeks. Avoid nicotine and alcohol. Get follow up with a gastroenterologist.
