Just ask: Addict or not the only way you will know is to discuss all of your symptoms with your doctor. Only difference is (s)he is unlikely to prescribe any medication that may be in any way addictive. Many medications can be used which may help you in the recovery process, especially if your addiction is due to self treatment of underlying symptoms.

The clinical psychologist can refer you to a Psychiatrist if you need medication to help with this. It is important to find the correct combination of medications with your Psychiatrist. But medications are not enough because they do not teach you coping skills.
