Less than 24 hours: The rate of drug excretion is called the half life; it is the time that it takes for half of the medication to be excreted from the body. Buprenorphine has a half life of 2-3 hours under normal circumstances. It takes five half-lives to eliminate a drug from the body, so in otherwise healthy people approximately 15 hours. This does not imply that the analgesic/opiate effect will last that long.

SL BUP 1/2 Life: Sublingual formulation of Buprenorphine (suboxone, subutex) has a half-life of approximately 36 hours. The half life is longer with the sl formulation than it is with the oral or transdermal. Depending on the dosage and ones pharmacogenetic makeup, it can be detected in body fluids up to one week, but usually 3-5 days. Sampling by other means may detect it beyond that.
