Fiber helps: A lot is said about diet and diverticular disease. High fiber diets prevent the development of diverticuli. If you have infection of one (diverticulitis), then what you eat doesn't matter. This is what may be happening if you're sore. Many physicians warn against nuts and seeds to prevent diverticulitis. Whether this is true is less certain.

Listen to GP: During an acute episode of diverticulitis (pain, tenderness, fever, elevated wbc, ct-evidence of inflammation), the involved colon becomes thickened, often leading to a partial large bowel obstruction. Therefore, food is restricted until the inflammation lessens. When symptom-free, we often advise high fiber diets to prevent progression of the disease and to decrease the risk of recurrence.
