NO: Dry socket occurs due to infection, causing loss of the fibrin clot, exposed the bone, causing osteomyelitis (bone inflammation) and necrosis, thus is termed "dry socket". Usually happened to smoker, immune deficient individual, diabetics, alcohol, and steroid user. These problems results in lower immunity and higher incidence of infection. Dry socket usually occurs day 3 after extraction.

No: Medications do not generally cause dry sockets after an extraction. You are safe taking benadryl (diphenhydramine). To avoid a dry socket, follow these rules for 3 days: 1. Do not smoke; 2: do not use a straw or suck on anything; 3. Avoid alcohol-containing drinks and mouth rinses; 4. Do not aggressively rinse/swish fluids in your mouth.
