Possibly: Gallstones alone may not be a cause for an operation but if they cause symptoms (pain, food intolerance, etc), it becomes much more likely. If you had a reason to find out you have gallstones, chances are you've had symptoms.

Not necessarily: You may never have symptoms but they may eventually cause problems.
