Gallstones: Are lumps found in the gallbladder or bile duct that are formed when substances there harden. It is not clear what causes them but can be from too much cholesterol in the bile, too much bilirubin in the bile or your gall bladder does not empty correctly. If the gallstones are not obstructing anything and the symptoms are manageable, surgery might not be absolutely recommended. Consult surgeon. :)

Not necessarily: Did she go to the ER because of gall bladder pain or were the stones found on an ultrasound for another reason? If this is her 1st.episode of GB pain her doctor may recommend watchful waiting. If recurrent pain attacks become a problem,s/he may recommend laparoscopic or robotic gall bladder removal.Hope this answers.
