Many things: For many, prevention = avoiding fried/oily foods, peppermint, chocolate, cheese, tomatoes, alcohol, nicotine, spicy foods, black pepper, orange juice, eating <4 hrs before bedtime.Raising head of bed 6in can help.Course of otc h2 blocker (eg. Ranitidine) or ppinhibitor (eg. Omeprazole) can help.If pain/difficult swallowing, wt loss, no appetite, or no improvement, better see doc; those can be warning signs.

Food elimination: I would recommend removing all dairy, grains, soy and sugar. If in 2wks things are better then you know food is a pbm. Then you can do a food challenge of the different food for a few days to see if any are tolerable of that group , -would not be a surperise for all of them to be a pbm.

Lifestyle changes: Here are some of things which worsen reflux: *overweight *large meals* fatty/acidic/coffee/tea/spicy foods*eating late at night*tight clothing. Sleeping on a wedge may help. Medications may be needed. Consult doctor if problem persists or worsens.
