Find and Fix Causes: The first step is to determine if the LDL is elevated due to an acquired medical condition. If treatable conditions are identified i would manage those and start diet, exercise and lifestyle modifications. Soluble fiber and plant stanols can be used to lower ldl. If medications are needed options include statins, agents to decrease gut cholesterol absorption (ezetimibe, colesevelam) and niacin.

Hatd work but possib: I would try diet exercise & weight loss first...If that's ineffective than medication could be considered.

Healthy lifestyle: If you're overweight, try to reach optimal weight. Don't smoke. Eat a vegetarian diet if you don't already. Exercise daily . If you have diabetes, keep your HgbA1c

Many Considerations: Ldl can be elevated for a variety of reasons. Your physician will need to check for several inherited and acquired medical conditions that can affect LDL levels. Another alternative is to see a lipidologist (physician specializing in lipid and lipoprotein disorders). You can find a lipidologist at www.Lipidboard.Org (click "verify status", then search your state).

Follow the following: Exercise most days of the week (aerobic work), eat fruits and vegetables liberally, limit saturated fats, increase fish and fish oil intake, have fiber with each meal, get six to nine hours of sleep nightly, keep your weight in check, don't sweat the small stuff, don't smoke or drink excessively (one or two drinks weekly). The lower the better on LDL and the higher the better on HDL.
