Snoring- sleep apnea: Do you gain weight in the winter? Is your nose more congested in the winter? Heavy snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea. Other symptoms include daytime sleepiness, episodes of stopping breathing in sleep and high blood pressure. It can be a dangerous condition. If you snore and are sleepy, have high blood pressure, or have been noticed to stop breathing in sleep, see a sleep medicine specialist.

Dry Nose?: In the winter time, people tend to suffer from nasal dryness. When the nose is excessively dry, the function can be impaired. This can cause congestion which can lead to changes in airflow that can contribute to the snoring. One can try ayr gel (otc saline gel) applied 2-3 times daily (before sleep). It is safe and it might make a big difference.

Yes: It's possible that he has nasal congestion at night forcing him to be a mouth breather when he sleeps. This can lead to snoring. The nasal congestion can be due to allergies or a recent cold. Have your husband try otc decongestant nasal sprays and/or breathe right strips for several nights. If this doesn't work or he has pauses in his breathing, you should see an ent.

Stop Snoring: Multiple factors contribute to snoring. These can include anatomic issues such as a deviated septum, long or low lying palate, a small jaw, a large tongue, a short, thick neck as well as carrying extra weight in the abdomen. Once sleep apnea is ruled out, things like breathe right strips, weight loss and oral appliances can be tried. Septal deviation and palate issues can be surgically corrected.

Narrowed airway: Snoring happens as muscles relax during sleep and air flows through a floppier smaller airway . If snoring is chronic it may be a sign of sleep apnea (osa) that is associated with daytime sleepiness cardiovascular disease , diabetes and headaches for example.

4 main reasons: There are 4 predisposing factors for snoring: 1) being human 2) being male 3) overweight 4) nasal congestion apparently, there is nothing to be done about 1 and 2, so you need to concentrate on 3 and 4. You also need to consider the possibility that you are not dealing with simple snoring but snoring as a symptom of sleep apnea. Overall, snoring is not a laughing matter. I would take it seriously.

Get him to a doctor who knows how to diagnose and treat sleep apnea. Snoring is merely annoying, but obstructive sleep apnea kills people.

Simple tips: Sleep on your side, lose weight, dont drink alcohol at night. If you have trouble breathing through your nose try a salt water rinse or even try a "breathe right strip". However most patients find that although the above does help it is not enough. If you snore and have difficulty with daytime sleepiness, morning headache, difficulty concentrating, you should be evaluated by an md for sleep apnea!
