It is 2 Pronged: The thumb basal joint near the wrist degenerates from loss of ligamentous support from normal pinching over time. The initial recovery is rather rapid, a week or so. However, because the ligaments are reconstructed and must be protected for about 3 months, you have restrictions and splints for that length of time. When the symptoms are severe enough, this is an exceptionally rewarding procedure.
