Depends on surgery: There are many types of surgical treatments for basilar thumb arthritis. Soft tissue arthroplasties rarely have painful complications. If an artificial implant is used, there are more possible problems. The first thing you should do is see your surgeon and get an x-ray. If your surgeon can't help you, get a 2nd opinion from a board certified orthopaedic hand surgeon. 40 is young for this surgery.

Replaced how?: Basilar thumb arthritis is a very common condition. Treatment results with surgery are generally quite good, especially pain relief. Typically the arthritic bone, the trapezium, is removed. It can be replaced by tendon or hematoma, with similar results. Things can get complicated when artificial replacements, such as metals and plastics, are used. Sometimes it's just a painful scar, c your doc!
