Technically it can: But it is usually of little benefit, because of the small size of the thumb joints. Depends on which joint as well. If you have pain or DJD in your basal thumb joint or cmc joint it can be cleaned out with a procedure called a trapezium resection and suspensionplasty. Great surgery 97-99% success rate. The other thumb joints can either be fused, but this sig. Decreases thumb function.
