A member asked:

3yo daughter had swelling of the lip and rash reaction to peanuts. what is the best treatment option - avoidance or desensitizing?

Avoidance: In my experience, centers that do advanced desensitization for nut allergies do not offer the procedure under 5 years of age. In the interim, an allergy action plan including an epi pen and frank discussions with all day care or child care personnel needs to be in place.

Desentization: For a three year old the best course would be desensitization at three it would be too hard to avoid peanuts.

See allergist: I would have your child checked by allergist. Desensitization for peanut allergy does give great hope but not generalized yet. Avoidance is essential. Have Epipen jr. (epinephrine injection) around as well.
