5 Years: The average age of menopause is 52. This is when a woman has gone 12 months without a cycle on no hormones. Perimenopause is variable but most women start having symptoms about 5 years before menses stop. Many women stop cycling for a few months and think they are menopausal only to start again. You do need to use a reliable birth control during this transition.
