Probably minimal: Can get bigger over time (or not); can cause symptoms (fullness, pain)- or not; can have intestine get stuck and can't "reduce" the lump-surgical urgency; can have intestine get stuck and compromise blood flow-surgical emergency. Talk to your doc. May be able to leave it for some time, especially if no symptoms.

Depends: A minor hernia can mean many things to different people. A hernia that causes pain or significant bulging should be fixed before other problems such as incarceration occur. If you have the hernia and rarely have symptoms, it can be watched and repaired only if you develop symptoms. The main risks are developing further problems such as incarceration or strangulation.
