True!: Botulism is a risk (life-threatening toxic exposure) when infants younger than a year consume wild honey. Breastfed infants are somewhat protected. Avoid honey for all infants before their first birthday!

Can be: Ingestion of honey contaminated with spores of clostridium botulinum causes infantile botulism, a potentially life threatening infection. Because of possible contamination, honey is not allowed to infants.

Sometimes: The most at risk are young infants. Their digestive system is immature & susceptible to this problem. Honey can contain botulism spores that will mature in the baby gut & begin to form the botulinum toxin that can cause muscle weakness, lethargy & interfere with breathing. After they turn a year old this has not been a problem.
