Dr. Pamela Pappas answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

It depends: Schizophrenia is a lifelong, serious illness which can be disabling if untreated. Treated well, a person can interact with others, work in a fulfilling way, and enjoy his/her life. So it depends on how well the illness is managed, and how willing the person is to take medications and be involved in therapy. I know many people with this diagnosis who do very well despite it.

Unfortunately: Schizophrenia is one of the most disabling medical conditions early and effective treatments can reduce this risk.
