A member asked:

How can you tell a patient has schizophrenia or schizoaffective? what are some differences so that you can make a proper diagnosis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

They are similar: Schizophrenia is a thought disorder. It includes problems with perception (hallucinations, delusions), apathy, little expressed emotion, and/or disorganized speech and behavior. In schizoaffective disorder, mood symptoms severe enough to meet criteria for a manic, mixed episode or major depressive episode are also present. Psychosis is usually present for at least 2 wks without major mood symptoms.
