A member asked:

Can you tell me how doctors test for schizophrenia and bipolar?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Mental Status: First, a mental status exam where they ask questions to learn if person knows what time it is, self vs. others, where they are, and what’s happening. Do behavioral observations to determine if person has pressured speech (extremely fast). They listen to the person’s speech to learn whether it is coherent. They can also refer for psychological testing where standardized tests are used.
