Dementia: Great question. Your doctor may be able to tell by doing a mini-mental status exam, labs and brain imaging. The doctor may also need to continue to try different medications to help tell the difference between med side effects, cancer, hydration levels, infections, generalized fatigue, poor sleep and other causes of dementia. Frequent office visits may be needed and good communication.

A mental status exam: Doctors, e.g., psychiatrists & neurologists do cognitive testing as a part of their regular examinations, called a "mental status examination" (mse), asking questions to assess his short- & long-term memory, and ability to care for himself. It is not fancy nor expensive. If he's now become "sharp as a tack", maybe you have no worries. Fancier tests are ordered if the mse shows severe memory probs.
