Post-nasal drip: While recovering from a cold the tissues lining the upper respiratory tract are continuing to regenerate and there is inflammatory material that during the day either flows down and is swallowed or cleared and swallowed without cough. At night, however, there is pooling of material in the back of the throat and coughing helps to clear it.
