Couple Possibilities: It sounds a lot like thrush (oral candidiasis), which is basically a yeast infection of the mouth. The white substance usually has a cottage cheese like consistency. However, there are other conditions which present with a white patch that match your description. Those conditions are lichen planus and leukoplakia. It would be best to consult with your dentist.

Fungal Infection: This is usually caused by a fungal infection called oral candidiasis. It usually forms a white patch on the tongue or cheeks. Your dentist can prescribe you a rinse and it will take care of it.

Possible thrush: If there is tongue pain or sore throat, this white layering that doesn't scrape off could be thrush. Your fp could give you Mycelex (clotrimazole) troche. Unlike most medicines, even though you put it in your mouth, you don't swallow it. It is considered a topical, so hold each losenge in your mouth and let it melt over time like a hard candy. Do this 4 times a day for a week, and if it's thrush, you'll be fine.
