EGD, barium x rays: The vast majority of stomach cancers, and all ulcers, are located in the inner lining of the stomach, so this is what must be visualized by the tests used to make this diagnosis. Egd, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy, is the visualization of the inner surface of the stomach by using a scope. Another method is to x ray the stomach after liquid barium contrast medium has been swallowed by the patient.

Biopsy: Only a biopsy can make the diagnosis of stomach cancer. If a stomach ulcer needs to be biopsied, a doctor needs to do an endoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera down your throat to your stomach) and then take a biopsy. Then the pathologist looks at it and see if there is cancer or not. Biopsy is the only way.
