Pulmonologist: Hemoptysis (coughing blood) can be from many things including -- infection (due you have pneumonia or bronchitis?), invasive fungal infections, cancer, pulmonary embolism (pe), or other problems. Different types of ct scans (ct angio pe protocol or ct high resolution chest) can help. As can a bronchoscopy by a pulmonologist.

Observe: If the blood is just a few dots on the kleenex, then it's probably ok. Make sure that you are not on any medications that can impair your clot or platelet function (aspirin, ibuprofen, coumadin, (warfarin) clopidogrel, etc). If this lasts for more than 7 days or gets worse, call your doctor back to re-evaluate.

Observe for now: Take some cough remedy. If the blood is only scanty/ blood streak- just observe for now- but you have to treat your congestion/cough etc that you have. If blood is more significant- or if that persists for more than a week- go to see your doctor and you will likely need to be seen by a pulmonologist for further eval. If you smoke, please quit smoking.
