Sometimes: Every case is different. It depends upon many factors. An orthodontist cannot always achieve a 100% ideal occlusion, depending upon jaw and tooth harmony, patient cooperation, etc. Slight spaces can often be resolved with adjustments using the final removable retainer. This is an issue that you should discuss with your own orthodontist who is most knowledgeable with your case.

Not finished.: The spaces should be closed while the braces are still on using an elastic called a power chain. If these spaces remain, it leaves you vulnerable to cavities and gum problems.

Maybe.: Sometimes, due to tooth size discrepancies, some spaces may be present at the end of orthodontic treatment. If you aren't sure if the spaces are because of this, either talk to your orthodontist or consult with another one and voice your concerns. If the spaces cannot be closed by moving teeth, see your dentist about closing the spaces with bonding.

Sometimes: There is usually residual band space between the back teeth that will close on it's own in a couple of months. At times it is not possible to close all spaces and some teeth need to be made a little bigger by adding composite to them. Upper lateral incisors are notorious for this. Discuss with your orthodontist your particular concerns.

YES AND NO: Braces are to align teeth to have a normal appearance so it depends on how they looked before braces if the teeth were crowded than small spaces would be a good result.
