Depends: Depends on which ligaments are involved around the ankle. Typically, the lateral ankle ligaments are injured with an inversion ankle sprain. These ligaments will often heal without surgery using immobilization and possibly some physical therapy. If you are left with instability or chronic pain after the ligaments have healed, surgery could be done at that time.
