MRIs Better, but...: ... They are much more expensive. Therefore, health insurance companies have very strict criteria whether they will cover the MRI cost. If this is a screening test (no abnormal symptoms or findings on exam), start with a mammogram. If the radiologist feels this test is insufficient, they will recommend an ultrasound +/- mri. If one has symptoms, it is best to see a breast surgeon first. Good luck!

I agree but would add that an mri and mammography are complimentary. There are occasionally findings that show up on mammography not on mr.

MRI: Mri will be more accurate but is generally not necessary. Mammo should be all right.

Follow up!: Your symptoms are concerning. I assume you have a followup with your doctor. He or she will let you know the next steps. You may need a ct scan of your abdomen. Either way, make sure you have an appointment to find out your next steps!

MRI is more: sensitive at detecting breast cancer than mammography. However, MR is not an ideal screening test for a variety of reasons, and mammography remains the standard of care.
