Stomach acid is produced by parietal cells within glands specific to the stomach. The purpose is to lower the pH in your stomach so that the enzyme Pepsin can be activated and digest food. This enzyme does not work as well at higher pH levels. Overproduction of stomach acid (caused by fatty or fried foods, tomato-based products, citrus fruits, garlic and onions) can cause erosive effects.
