Dental fillings: Amalgam used to be the treatment of choice (durable and cost effective) for patients, and still is in most countries, but now because of controversy over mercury you have other options to substitute amalgam.

NEVER--Bad Material: Amalgam is a bad restoration. I have seen countless numbers of broken, cracked, decayed teeth due to the difference in expansion and contraction characteristics between amalgam and tooth structure. Amalgam expands and contracts much more than tooth and causes cracks, breakage, decay of tooth, sometimes requiring tooth extraction. It's cheap, which is never a reason for treatment justification!

I have a number amalgam restorations, some of 60 years duration. I have needed one crown and one implant/crown because of fractures in tweets with 50 year old amalgams. There are pros and cons for every medical/dental procedure. Discuss them with your Dentist, the practitioner that best knows your restorative requirements.
