Other labs: The BUN and creatinine are important to follow and indicators of kidney function, but dialysis is based more on other chemicals that build up with bad kidney function, especially potassium. The buildup of waste products and electrolytes are what are more important and will determine when dialysis is necessary.

Ten: It is generally accepted that a GFR of 10 or less or a serum creatinine level of 10 or higher to the point at which dialysis is started. However, dialysis is started when all other therapies have or are failing and the only alternative left is dialysis. Why? Because dialysis is a huge life changer for anyone irrespective of age.

Timing of HD: GFR is not the only test that determines the timing of dialysis. It is a combination of GFR and more important symptoms of kidney waste product build up that help the timing of dialysis. often patients can have a low GFR, say 12cc/min and not need dialysis. Your kidney doctor would look at combinations of issues and not just GFR or creatinine
