Depends on patient: Many primary dr & cardiologists will do an annual ekg to have for comparison and check heart rhythm, but if there has not been a cardiac event (heart attack or similar), there is not a clear benefit to this. Would say annually or longer in stable patient (even w/chf).

EKG in CHF: An ekg is important to diagnose an acute heart attacks or to see if a patient has an abnormal heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. An echocardiogram will give an idea of the ejection fraction (ef) of the patient. It can visualize the wall motion of the heart. In addition it will see if the patient has pulmonary artery hypertension. This is another cause of edema that can be treated by meds.
