S/he will take your history, including previous episodes, other medical illnesses & medications, family history, any substance use, and carefully assess your mental health in an interview. Some lab studies (such as checking thyroid function, metabolic panel, b12, folate, (folic acid) etc) are also often done. Then treatment plans can be made.

Objective measures: Specialists can provide you some assessment instruments to complete, but sometimes that's not always necessary. I would caution you against self diagnosing though. Speak to a professional and see if you fit criteria for treatment of depression based on symptoms.
