No best practice: There is no best or right way. Everyone is different. Some are fine with only local anesthesia, others benefit from also having "laughing gas" (sweet air) and some prefer to be "put out" with IV sedation. "best" is based upon you and your surgeon agreeing on methods to use. Discuss this issue with the dentist who will be treating you.
