Dental xrays should show an abscess but I've seen a few patients who had recent dental xrays & had a periapical abscess very shortly thereafter. It's hard to know whether the abscess/inflammation was brewing at the time of the dental xrays a few days earlier.

An x-ray is a 2 dimensional representation of a 3 dimensional object. That means x-rays tell us a lot, but not everything. Additionally an abscess can take time to damage bone, and not immediately appear on x-ray. Question is what is causing the inflammation and what treatment has been prescribed?
