Depends on Medicine: Several different types (classes) of medications are used to lower blood pressure. Most of these take many days to a few weeks to slowly bring blood pressure down. Keep in mind that blood pressure is dynamic and will rise and fall throughout the day in response to various things. Talk to your doctor for a specific answer regarding the medicine you are taking.

Guidelines: Physicians typically choose blood pressure medications based on the recommendations of jnc 7, which is a collection of recommendations from national experts based on the most up-to-date research. While most docs follow these recommendations, it is important to consider each patient individually based on their needs and any other illnesses.
