Depends: The upper back can experience pain from spinal alignment problems (scoliosis), shoulder problems, or injuries to the ribs. Massage is usually helpful. Try changing your exercise to stand taller (yoga), breathe deeper (yoga) or balance your shoulder muscles (strengthening/ rowing & "pull downs").

Myofascial pain.: Sometimes a local muscle group gets sensitized and develops a 'trigger point.' local deep pressure massage, stretchin exercise, and/ora trigger point injection, or a patch with a local anaesthetic ("lidoderm") may help that condition. You are a bit young to have had shingles, which may also be helped by the patch.
