Not much: There aren't a lot of natural remedies safe for a preschooler. Ther are some organic cough syrups for kids on most shelves, just look for them. Use a cool mist humidifier at night. If the cough is bad enough to interfere with vigorous play, or with sleep see the doctor for complete diagnosis & tx.

See below: If it might be asthma, see your child's doctor. If the cough is from post nasal drip or other irritation, in addition to saline washes for the nose, kids over 12 months old can use 1 teaspoon buckwheat honey as often as needed. Check with your local whole foods store or a health food store in the honey section. It's been clinically proven to work better than prescription cough syrups with codeine!

Take him to Pediatri: Take him to a pediatrician. People still die from asthma. I would not trust natural remedies during an acute asthma attack. Besides he may also have pneumonia or croup. He needs bronchodilators and maybe antiinflamatories like steroids if he has real asthma (and possible antibiotics). Avoid allergens like cats, dogs, dust near him. Once ok for prevention of attacks you may try vitamins a, e, c.

See a doctor : A child with a persisting, spasmodic cough should be evaluated by a doctor. While over the counter allergy mess might help somewhat, we're talking about breathing, here. This can get dangerous quickly. And the out of pocket cost on one year's worth of medication should be less than the cost of one emergency room visit.
