None: Antibiotic are for infection and indirectly for pain. Each antibiotic targets different types of bacteria. Broad spectrum antibiotics like pennicillin or Amoxicillin are considered first line drugs. Cleocin (clindamycin phosphate) and other are more specific. If the antiobiotic works then there is less swelling and pain. If the tooth is inflammed and not infected, antibiotics won't help.

Antibiotic./Dental: First, brand implies a specific company's medication. Most antibiotics are generics. That said, the preferred medication for dental pain is penicilllin vk or some derivitive and most dentist will use Amoxicillin since it doesn't have to be taken as often. For those allergic to penicicillins, we use Clindamycin or cephlaxin. The doseage of any of these would depend on severity of problems.

Need painkiller: Antibiotics treat an infection, not pain. If you are looking for a medication to treat dental pain, the most common and preferred drug is ibuprofen, if it is safe for you to take. Otherwise you may try tylenol (acetaminophen). If over the counter pain medications dont work, see a dentist for the proper pain medication and an evaluation to identify the cause. The best way to eliminate pain is to treat the problem.

None directly: Although many infections my cause aches and pains, antibiotics do not directly treat pain. Instead they are used in concert with pain relieving medications. Aches and pains from infections may be a byproduct of fever. Medications such as advil, tylenol (acetaminophen) or Aspirin are frequently used to control fever, aches and pains. Consult your doctor which would be best for your condition.

Penicillin 1st Line: The preferred and first line of antibiotic choice for dental infection is penicillin. If you allergic to penicillin, then Clindamycin is usually the next choice.
