A member asked:

Prior to most dental procedures are valve repair patients at a real risks of endocarditis and is the need of anti-biotics best advice from surgeons?

No premed needed: The most recommendations of the american heart association is that premedication with antibiotics is not needed for patients with valve repair. If you have an artificial valve then antibiotics would be needed before dental treatment. If you have any questions discuss this with your dentist, cardio.Ogist or primary care.

YES!: It is so simple to do. Just take the antibiotics and be safe.

Need 4 Premedication: The risk is considered low and the aha does not include this as one of the generally recommended times that prophylactic antibiotics be used. However, i always advise my patients to discuss this personally with their own cardiologist just to be sure. It should be their call and for most patients it is better to err on the side of caution.

Conflicting: Because of conflicting research and opinions i would ask your dentist to consult with your cardiologist. They are the two people most familiar with your individual set of circumstances.

I believe so: Antibiotic before dental procedures are required to prevent any possible complications (infection).

Varies: Depends on age of repair and type. Antibiotic coverage is changing as we learn more. Check with your physician.
