Do you have problems: If you are experiencing any difficulty eating, speaking, or have crowded teeth, then i would recommend having a consult. Even if you have no discomfort, but already have crooked, crowded teeth this is a good idea. Over time even a little bit of crowding can get much worse and end up jeopardizing the health of the gums and bone around your teeth.

Possibly: Your teeth need to be repositioned now, so that after the surgery they will meet correctly. The surgey is indicated due to a jaw size discrepancy, so even if your teeth are straight now, they would not be in the correct position after the surgery. Consult with your surgeon and an orthodontist.

Yes: Having braces on assists the oral surgeon in properly coordinating the upper and lower jaws during surgery. They are the attachment points for ligerature ties and elastic wear post surgery. They are an absolute must to have.

Yes: Braces are needed as anchors to assist the surgeon in properly aligning the jaws. Also, there is likely to be some tooth or root alignment necessary even if not obvious. Please see an orthodontist who will assist in working with an oral surgeon to get the very best result for you.

Ideally, yes.: Orthodontics is usually necessary prior to jaw surgery to remove dental compensations caused by the jaw positions. The teeth should be upright and centered within the bones before the surgery is done so when the surgery is done, the surgeon will be able to reposition the jaws and the teeth will fit together in the best possible way.

Depends! see details: If models of your teeth can be placed together properly before surgery-probably not. Most surgeons want braces placed so they can utilize them during surgery to stabilize the movement-good reason.

Probably: Up until very recently, traditional braces were absolutely necessary for surgical patients. The oral surgeons use the appliances to make sure that the teeth fit together in the operating room and make sure that the bones are fixated in the correct position. Recently, other means of fixation and other methods can be utilized. You need to discuss this with both the surgeon and the orthodontist.

Possibly: Straight front teeth may not be the issue. Once the surgical positioning of the jaws is accomplished, the teeth must fit together. In other words, pre-surgical orthodontics is designed to prepare the positions of the teeth to accommodate the corrected jaws.

Probably: Although your teeth may appear "straight" to you, that doesn't medan that they will fit well (to to bottom) once jaw position is corrected. Ask your general dentist or your oral surgeon to refer you to an orthodontist for an initial evaluation. The time and effort spent to set -up your teeth before surgery, will insure a better functional and esthetic result.

No, but ...: Braces might work instead of surgery. I would consult a couple of orthodontists see determine the best course of action.

Most Likely YES: When undergoing underbite surgery, braces serve 2 purposes: 1) to put your teeth in the best position within the jaw bone (they usually have tipped to accomodate the underbite) 2) to stabilize the jaws in the correct position when the surgeon moves them in the or until recently, all surgical cases were done with braces. Now, some can be done with invisalign and temporary bone pins (tads)!

Underbite Surgery: From the question amount of underbite not described accept that the teeth are aligned. Usually the surgeon doing surgery would only do the surgery with an orthodontist doing brace, because the teeth have to fit after his surgery. Eventho a patient may feel the teeth are aligned they will not fit properly after surgery. At times no surgery is needed only braces. See ortho and have this explained.

Braces - jaw surgery: Your teeth will have aligned themselves to accommodate the current misaligned jaw relationship. Once the jaws are aligned the teeth will not fit. Braces are usually used before the jaw surgery to provide the correct alignment of teeth after the surgery is completed. Typically you will need additional ortho tooth alignment after the surgery. All this requires the braces on your teeth.
